Life on the road with the Ladybird Reading Bus

After 1500 miles and 14 days on the road, the Ladybird campervan arrived back at Ladybird HQ last week.  It was a fantastic, fun-filled tour as we visited selected Haven holiday parks around the country, entertaining hundreds of kids along the way.

The Bus
The Ladybird Reading Bus was a completely new idea and we were delighted with how well the tour went. We were keen to show off some of our new books and from the reception we received, we know we made some new fans – both parents and children – as well as reminding others why Ladybird is a true National treasure.

After launching at Westfield in London, the campervan travelled south to Dorset before heading to the wilds of North Wales.  Come rain or shine the Ladybird team were out storytelling, face painting and colouring with eager kids.

Making Ladybirds
Some of our favourite reading sessions were from the Ladybird First Favourite Tales series, with classics The Gingerbread Man and Goldilocks proving to be a big hit. We had lots of books available for children to look at; the Peppa Pig books were as popular as ever and the older children were enjoying a bit of independence, reading to themselves from our Read it yourself range.

Reading in Wales
We knew we would be super busy on the tour and asked our marketing assistant (very nicely) if she’d like to come along and help. Luckily for us she agreed, but it was quite a different experience for her. In her own words: ‘When I first started working with the Ladybird team, I expected to be doing the usual office duties, but I’m now on a two-week tour of England and Wales in a beautifully decorated campervan.  Life at Ladybird has greatly exceeded my expectations!’. Here's a picture of Liz (centre) with me and James, our lovely co-storyteller – and principal bus driver!.

  The-bus-gang

After a stop off at Harvest at Jimmy’s, the last leg of the tour took us back north to Yorkshire and Lincolnshire where we bumped into Annabel Karmel at one of the Haven Parks who was leading a cake decorating workshop – yum!

We’ll have the bus out on the road again soon, so if you missed us this year we hope to meet you next time.  Leave a comment and let us know where you think the bus should go next.

We are also running a fantastic prize draw to win a family break next spring from our friends at Haven. We had such fun at the holiday parks, we're sure you will too.  If you’d like to be in with a chance of winning, you can enter here.
